Hi,

I'm trying to measure the movement of grain through a hopper

ive attached a couple images of the simulations im trying to analyze





would this be possible using this tool

Hello Jay,
yes that would be possible. But the displacement in your example data is extremely low (around 0.08 pixels). So the noise will be very high. You need to have a higher displacement between the two images (maybe 1-10 pixels), then the results will be better. Is it possible to add additional texture to the individual particles in the simulation? You should also not compress the image data for your analysis.

thank you for the advice ill use the uncompressed version of the simulation. one more question did you have to exclude the background and hopper from the analysis did you use the masking tool or something not in the tutorial thank you

Yes, you'll have to mask everything else. It might help to make the non-interesting areas completely black. I think that PIVlab doesn't calculate velocities in completely black areas. So that might save the workbook masking the images.
